JACK McKENZIE | COMPOSER
JACK McKENZIE is an Award-nominated Scottish Composer, Orchestrator and Arranger for Film, Television and Video Games. A highly versatile writer, his music varies in genre and style, often maintaining a heavy emphasis on story-focused melodic or thematic writing in combination with the integration of unusual and unique contemporary techniques and sounds.
Jack recently scored KALU: GROWING UP WILD (2023), a short nature documentary on the Geoffrey's Spider Monkey in Costa Rica, narrated by GEORGE McGAVIN - earning him a nomination for "Best Original Score (Short Documentary)" at the HOLLYWOOD MUSIC IN MEDIA AWARDS (2023) in Los Angeles, California.
He is a frequent assistant and collaborator with fellow Scottish Composer BLAIR MOWAT, most recently as an Additional Music Composer for ITV’s hit crime drama McDONALD & DODDS and as an Arranger and Orchestrator for Mowat's BAFTA-nominated score for NOLLY, written by Russell T. Davies and directed by Peter Hoar.
As an Orchestrator, Jack has prepared scores for numerous large and small-scale sessions, collaborating with some of the world’s finest Studios and Musicians including; AIR STUDIOS LONDON, CLOCKWORK SESSIONS, THE BUDAPEST ART ORCHESTRA with EAST CONNECTION RECORDING and, alongside MOWAT, were the first to record a film score with the ROYAL SCOTTISH NATIONAL ORCHESTRA in their new state-of-the-art recording facility SCOTLAND'S STUDIO (October 2021). Recent orchestration projects include Netflix's LIFE ON OUR PLANET, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (2023) and BLACK ADAM (2022) with LORNE BALFE and M3GAN (2023) with ANTHONY WILLIS.
Jack studied with Contemporary Electro-Acoustic Composer TIMOTHY COOPER whilst undertaking his BMus (Hons) Undergraduate Degree in Edinburgh, before going on to study a Post Graduate in Composition for Film & TV at the prestigious and award-winning NATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION SCHOOL. After obtaining his Masters Degree, Jack was personally mentored by Oscar-Winning composer DARIO MARIANELLI.
After mentoring with ADAM LUKAS (OBERNOSTERER), an Emmy-winning Composer at HANS ZIMMER'S BLEEDING FINGERS MUSIC, Jack now regularly contributes original music for the company and their partnered Production Music Libraries: SONY/ATV and EXTREME MUSIC.
As a Tutor, Jack also creates a variety of educational content on his YouTube Channel including; Tech and Sample Library Reviews, Film Music Analyses, MIDI Tutorials and Mock-Up Covers.
